Virtual Hard Disc (VHD) is a file that acts like a physical hard disc. It allows using several operating system on one host machine and also is used for backup and recovery. In DAEMON Tools Ultra you can create, mount and use VHD exactly like ordinary disc.
To create VHD go to Tools menu and choose Create VHD... or simply press F2 key. Here you need to do several easy steps:
Choose path and name of your future VHD Image. Use Browse... button to simplify this process.
Enter the size of the image. Choose MB or GB in the drop-down list. Note, that image size needs to be smaller than the available free space on your physical hard disc.
Choose VHD sizing format:
The size of dynamically expanding disc increases when data is saved to it, but doesn't decrease when data is deleted from it.
The fixed size virtual disc uses constant space of your physical hard disc. We recommend you to use this option.
The main options were set, but also you can make partition for your VHD and choose its file system just like on the physical disc. If you are going to set these additional features, check Specify VHD properties option.
Type Label of volume.
Select VHD file system.
Boot record option allows you to choose whether the VHD will contain the master boot record. If you check MBR option, the disk will contain a boot sector which specifies how the logical partitions are organized. If you don't need this sector, choose None option.
If you choose Mount after creation option, then VHD will be mounted automatically right after it is ready to use. Also you can choose how to mount the disk:
If Mount as removable storage option is checked, the VHD will be recognized by the system as removable media (an optical disc or flash drive).
If Mount as hard disk drive option is checked, the VHD will be recognized by the system as fixed media (a hard disk drive).
Check Add to Image Catalog option, if you want to keep this image at hand after creating.
Click Start button to begin creating VHD or Home button to cancel this operation.
While DAEMON Tools Ultra is creating VHD, you can check entered settings or hide this window. Click Hide button and you will get the main program's window with Status Bar that is displayed on the previous screenshot. Any time you can expand Creating VHD window by clicking on the Status Bar or cancel the operation. When VHD Image is created, you will get the next window:
Click Finish button to return to the main program's window.
